Between Drawing and Writing

Drawing is a method to assimilate his inner and outer surroundings; the action of drawing is like adding weight to the surface, and the weight turns into various lines and strokes that form some language. Every stroke drawn or written is to document his consciousness activities, in the meantime being aware of the status of his consciousness. To sum up, drawing is the result of assimilation towards oneself.

Automatic writing is used as a method of drawing to record his consciousness. Separating the structure of each kanji (Chinese character) that comes to mind allows more time to comprehend the vocabulary, have a clearer image of his flow of consciousness, and visualize a state of mind. Kanji is used in his works to represent his heritage as a Hong Kongese whose Cantonese is their mother tongue, the default written language constructed as comprehension happens in mind.

In the meantime, drawing/writing also brings up an ambiguous relationship between drawing and writing. Clinton considers his works drawing as the usage of writing appears to be the visual element instead of a readable text. Unlike books or other information distribution, creating an abstract atmosphere with strokes identical to part of a language can represent a state of mind, as a state of mind itself is abstract due to its temporality and uncertain nature.
